Day_29_Doing_Gratitude

Saying you are grateful is an important act that gives you many benefits. DOING gratitude completes the circle. Please consider sharing an act of kindness, giving, service or gratitude that you have or plan to perform as a way of staying connected to your appreciation. (See Gratitude Letter for one idea.)

I am thankful that my family and I are blessed with a home that has heat. We have blankets and beds to rest in. I am thankful that we are provided with all that we need and much of what we want. I am grateful!

On a daily basis I find gratitude. It may be simply an observation in nature, news of a loved one returning home unexpectently, the food that we eat, that our home is comfortable. I have learned more and more, that it isn't material things that I am grateful for, but relationships, safe travel, home, time with loved ones, etc. When I acknowledge those things with gratitude, I draw blessing into my life.

I think that a symptom of being grateful is the willingness to share what we have. When I realize how blessed I am and live with gratitude, it is easier for me to give of what I have - time, talent, money or whatever - to benefit others. I'm grateful for my parents who modeled generosity and taught me that sharing expresses our deep gratitude for what we have.

I am grateful to all of the 30 DOG contributors. I have enjoyed reading everyone's contributions and have learned so much. I don't recall whose idea it was, but someone mentioned that they discuss at dinner each night something good that happened that day. I think that is such a nice idea and I plan on passing that idea along to my friends and family.

My family always sponsors a family through our church at Christmas time. I think it's important to remember that not everyone has the blessing of being able to provide their family with Christmas wishes and food. This year, I will be involving my children in the gift purchasing to help them understand the idea of giving and being grateful for what we have.

Making myself take the time to think about what I am grateful for has made me a happier person. It makes me notice the smaller things and the bigger things and opens my eyes to the many, many blessing I have in my life.

I have enjoyed this experience so much that I would like to consistently declare my gratitude about one thing each day. I plan to do it during happy hour, when I sit down with my husband to review the day and our experiences. I'll share with him what my gratitude is for the day, and keep this beautiful exercise in humility and thankfulness going!

I love to crochet and am looking at making prayer shawls as a way to let folks know that they are important to me and that they truly are in my prayers, especially when they are experiencing rough times.

I am so grateful for this site, and for it forcing me to take time to realize all that I have to be thankful for...which spurs me to pass on that message, talk about it with friends, family & co-workers and then to begin doing works that spread good. In the midst of our crazy days, we are presented with a multitude of opportunities to help someone - even if it's just opening the door for them, offering a smile or a kind word...all ripples that effect the entire universe & make us feel good in the process. Amazing!

I'm a big believer in service as a way of remembering my gratitude and to teach gratitude to my kids. But we aren't always consistent with commitments. Our church sends a small contingent of volunteers to Nicaragua each year and I would love to take my two able sons on the trip. I think it will be a great way to keep gratitude front and center for all of us.

I want to be able to volunteer very soon in order to give to others or help them. I feel that the more you give of yourself, the more content you will be..

I've found the quickest way to forget about my own problems is to help someone else. No matter what kind of mood I am in, my spirit is lifted up when I am able to help out someone else, whether it be physically assisting or simply listening.

Each year at Christmas my family selects either a child from the angel tree or seniors from a nursing home to give back some of the blessings that have been bestowed on us. I have also participated in the current Habitat for Humaity Women Build home in my community. It makes me feel good knowing that I can help others not a fortunate as I am. My daughter is 24 and she is the first one to ask about the Christmas gifts for others and she has currently volunteered over 600 hours with the local USO in the past three years. I am proud of her wanting to help others.

We sponsor a family every year at Christmas time through our church. This year I'm helping my mom do the shopping and pick out the toys for the kids.

So that I can do more to help this world. I do what I can, but I would love to have the resources to do really big things! That is how I would like to show gratitude to the world and mankind.

+1 #37 Ann, Anne and Anniererez 11-30-2009 09:40 zirkel ny

I'm grateful for the Annes in our life. Sister-in law Anne who helped me live through the hectic early days of mothering her 11 and my nine. Now I help her as we both age and I can drive her to stores, doctor's appointments, and fun things like movies and restaurants and beaches. But mostly I listen to her. She's lonely after her husband died and her children became naturally busy with their families.

For Ann G from my high school days, who reconnected with me after 60+ years. We refresh each other's live with happy remembrances of our youth and updates on how life's evolving.

Then there's our amazing daughter Annie Z whose 30 Days of Gratitide Project took her time, trouble and talent to remind us to be present to the blessings in our lives rather than the black clouds. She also counsels parents, gives lectures, writes books, creates newsletters for special needs children, is a good wife, and mothers three terrific children, the oldest with special needs himself. We are so proud of her!!!

I am grateful that I am able to donate my time and money to those causes that I'm most interested in. I serve on our city's Parks Commission and help keep our parks clean and updated, as well as try to make the park system somewhere everyone wants to go. I also donate money to various national and state park related organizations, to keep America's natural beauty preserved for generations to come.

As my children were growing up I volunteered at their schools (I still do it today even after all the kids have left home.) I find it a good way to stay connected with their teachers and friends and today find it a good way to stay connected to the community. I love being around the whole atmosphere of learning. I love seeing the kids bright eyes and their quest for education. With all the interest in computers today, I love seeing how the younger kids love to check a book out and want to be read to.

I started the practice of "Give A Dollar A Day" just over a week now and I love the concept. I plan to do this for a very long time. Here is the web site if anyone who is interested.

Just leave a dollar somewhere, anywhere for someone to find by surprise.

I'm thankful for the Habitat for Humanity program which helps people in need to acquire housing and financial help. I plan to devote my time and knowledge to them next year to show my appreciation.

The past month of gratitudes has helped remind me to take time to be grateful for all the blessings that I have. When I have felt down or otherwise negative, coming to the site and typing up my gratitudes has been a balm to the soul and reminded me that I am truly blessed in my family, friends and life in general.

I'm Grateful for my good friend Annie who has given us all the gift of this gratitude project, and helped me with so many other obstacles I had to overcome. I can feel on a daily basis what a positive effect this has on my life. I'll continue to remain conscious of all the things I'm grateful for long after this project is finished.

Thanks Annie!

I have a family that I have adopted over the years and have been very blessed by being a part of their lives. What started as a simple act of "adopting" them thru my church has become a real adoption of the heart and caring for this wonderful family of 6 (single mom w/5 kids!) I am truly grateful and blessed for having them in my life to show "gratitude" for!

This morning I was hoping to leave to get on the road early and beat holiday traffic. But my father was insistent on making me breakfast, which I didn't want to eat because I don't like to stop on the way down, except for gas. I was really irritated, but I stayed and ate it and as I was driving I realized how lucky I was that my dad wanted to spend time with me and cook me breakfast. I'm going to make sure I write to him and tell him that I was grateful for it and apologize for any irritation that was expressed. Gotta love dad's. :)

Maybe if I write this down I can actually get it done.
The kids at Inkster played in the state championship last Friday at Ford Field. They lost the game but I pray that they take away the thought that they are winners in my eyes- my families too. They (and I include their excellent band in this) showed their energy, their pride, their excellence and their class. That is a recipe for success.
Two examples from the end of the game. After playing a well fought game, no giving up, the trophies were presented and the teams were exiting the field one of the Inkster players quietly held up his hands and had his team hold up while the winning team left the field. That forced his team to watch the joyous team walk off. It was a simple moment that was extremely respectful and humble and showed the strength of this group. There were no coaches around- just the young men.

The band literally never lost a beat after the loss. They marched right up out of the stadium and down the streets of Detroit with the incredible flair that they showed at halftime. They looked victorious and their performance was a victory for excellence.

I was thankful for their example to show my kids how to handle themselves when they meet adversity. God bless the kids at Inkster.

0 #26 An ongoing commitment to being gratefulKylie 11-29-2009 23:07 Melbourne, Australia

The past 29 days have reminded me that shifting my focus and mindset to daily moments of gratitude is energising and behaviour altering. I am committed to maintaining a gratitude journal and sharing my experiences with others. With this in mind, I would like to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to the 30DOG team for their initiative and global perspective. The world is a better place because of you all. Thank you!
