Day_17_Senses

It is a given that we have a harder time appreciating those aspects of our lives that come naturally. Most people have fairly functional senses that continuously give our brain input to refine the choices that we make in any given moment. Take a minute now to consider one of these senses and why you appreciate it.

This is one of those things that is taken for granted. Most of us are born with our five senses, so we don't think about it much. I have worked with people lacking various senses, and they can have a completely different view of the world based upon the alteration of even one sense. I am most grateful for my sight. It not only assists me functionally, but being able to see all the beauty in the world is something to really be thankful for.

, said Aeon the vulture to Happy (the baby new year) at the sight of his giant ears. Dumbo drew similar reactions. Thank goodness for their ears. Thank goodness for mine too.

I cannot give thanks enough for the sound of music, the wind and my kids laughter. How hard it must be for those who live their lives in the sound of silence. God bless them.

Thanks for sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell, and for all the other senses that give me experiences of being alive with others in our global village.

Over this past weekend my hubbie made his annual home made Chex Mix for the upcoming Holidays. By the end of its baking, the house was filled with the aroma of this delicious home made snack. My gratitude was thoughts of how wonderful it is to have family tradition and this aroma symbolized to me the gathering of family and friends.

Wow, where to start? I am thankful for my eyesight, even though it is by far not perfect, I am extremely thankful that I can gaze upon the beauty of this world and the beloved faces of those I love. I am thankful for the sense of hearing, from the roar of a F-15 ripping through the sky to the music of my childrens laughter. I am thankful for my sense of smell, it is very acute and that can sometimes be bad, but I am more blessed than anything by the delicious aromas that greet my nose, the smell of a cool evening, a forest, pines, cedar, horses, sawdust, a new book, coffee grounds, fresh laundry, bread baking in the oven, my list could go on forever! I am also very blessed by my sense of touch of course, from my husbands caresses to the soft chubby fingers of my toddler, I am so very thankful. And last, but definately not least, I am so very thankful for taste, I love to eat! Korean, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, seafood, a juicy steak, some sweet iced tea..... Thankyou heavenly Father for the blessings of our 5 senses, you are AMAZING!!!!!!

Over 10 years ago now, I had laser eye surgery to correct my severe nearsightedness and astigmatism. From age 8 until then I would wake up every morning, unable to make out even the alarm clock on the bedside table without my glasses, which I found by always putting in the same spot the night before and feeling for them in the morning. I remember the clicking and clacking noises of the laser and the burnt smoke smell during the procedure. When the doctor asked me to open my eyes in recovery, I could not believe all I could see, sharp and clear if a bit watery, without my glasses. Afterward I relied on the gentle steady touch of my husband as he guided me safely home with my eyes bandaged. For weeks I would still try to take off my glasses at bedtime.

I am so grateful for my vision. Even when I had to wear contacts and glasses, I was always grateful for the people who invented them to help me see better. Now that I've had LASIK to improve my vision, I am even MORE grateful than ever to see things clearly.

To me the ability to see all the beauty in the world is so important to my life. I thank God for my eyesight - even with the use of glasses! I am so grateful for how amazingly beautiful the nature is; how humakind has also created much beauty as well.

I am so grateful for our five senses, although we tend to take them for granted. I most grateful for the sense of vision. I think I would be so insecure and terrified if I could not see.

I am thankful for all my senses. Without them I wouldn't be able to see the beautiful day, or smell the wonderful meal my neighbor is grilling as I go on my evening walk, or pet my cat to ease the tension and stress away, or hear the song the bird has chosen to bless me with, or to taste a new recipe that my daughter wantes to try. God has blessed me!

I am grateful for the gift of sight to see the beauty around me and the smile of a loved one. I am grateful for the gift of sound to hear a child's laughter or a piece of beautiful music. I am grateful for the sense of smell so I can smell a rose. I am grateful for the sense of taste so I can appreciate so many yummy foods (especially chocolate) and for the sense of touch so I can feel the softness of my childs cheek or a melting snowflake on my hand.

My beautiful gift of sight, the beauty I enjoy of nature. The taste of something sweet, salty, or bitter. The smell of fresh breezes or a deliciously cooked dinner. The touch of my precious dog's fur and his sweet doggy kisses. My hearing sense which enables me to hear the songs of birds or the bark of my dog, and the sound of beautiful music!

My 89 year old mother went blind a few years ago from a rare form of glaucoma after seeing eye specialists regularly for several years to treat her glaucoma and macular degeneration. This has made me appreciate my sight all the more after seeing how Mom has struggled. Everyone who is lucky enough to have their sight should be grateful and take good care of your eyes!

I am so grateful I can smell - coffee, my baby's head, the morning air, perfume, cookies. And that I can see - my kids smile, the sunset, the Texas hills, my baby's eyes. My kids and I play the game of what sense is more important of our five. How can we decide?

Oh, how nice to touch velvet, skin, my husband's beard, the pages of a book, a nice sweater, soft grasses in late summer... I'm really just as grateful for the other senses. How lucky I am to have them all!

+2 #64 Which of the five could I give up?josie 11-18-2009 12:59

None! Hearing music and birdsongs are my passions. Seeing art and nature are crucial to my well being. Tasting and smelling food makes eating so much more than adding fuel to my body. Touching allows me to work at my computer and in my lab, and to move through life's required functions efficiently and safely. And finally my spatial sense and balance allows me to walk, to dance, and to relax feeling like I belong in the space I occupy. How could I give any of those up? And yet I know I could, and with the help of friends and my natural optimism, both of which I am so grateful for, I could survive and thrive.

I can't single any of them out....love the smell of freshly washed sheets....the sight of my cat curled up in a ball asleep....the sound of my pup when he first wakes up (sounds like a grunting little piglet)..a good hug or a fantastic kiss..the smell of anything cooking in garlic and olive oil and then the first bite! Each of those brighten my day...so grateful...

I am grateful that the universe is restoring my mother's hearing after she has suffered for almost four years now. Although the process is slow, I am thankful she has been able to keep her faith and patience. I am in awe of my senses and filled with love for the fact that I have them because I could not write poetry without those faculties.

Pizza is the best food ever. Some of it is so good, it feels like breaking some kind of law to be eating it.

All 5 senses are working A-OK and I hope they always will! But I think the one I am most grateful for is the sense of touch. Growing up my family was not very good about hugs & kisses or pats on the back. Basically, we rarely touched. Thankfully that is not the case for my life now. Whether it is my husband, daughter, other family member, friend or the cat & dog I am thankful for the ability to feel those hugs & kisses all the way down to my heart and know that God put those people in my life so that my sense of touch was not forgotten.

Of all the senses, I must say that sight is the one that I am most grateful for. I know that other senses are heightened if you lose your sight, but it would be the hardest for me to be without. I think of being on Safari in Kenya and Tanzania a few years ago and to be to see the lions, giraffes, zebras, wilderbeest, and so many more amazing creatures was such a blessing. I am grateful to to be able to see the beautiful faces of my three granddaughters.

My senses are such an integral part of who I am. I can't imagine losing any of them. I have friends who are blind and paralyzed and they are both incredible achievers (and very positive) so it is possible to flourish without a sense, but their loss has made me much more aware of how precious a gift we have. Any loss of sense would diminish our ability to share and enjoy our world.
